Harps & Angels
»rank: 346
0ur Review: :Randy Newman's first studio album of all new material in nearly a decade is, by turns, hilarious, poignant and scathingly satirical. Harps and Angels often has an easy going Crescent City feel, with Newman on piano fronting a small combo and revealing, as Rolling Stone put it after the Carnegie Hall show, his serious love and study of the New 0rleans piano tradition.

Cars

from: Walt Disney Records
0ur Review: :Cars is a typical Disney-Pixar animated movie in that it deals with an anthropomorphic character (here, a car) and the heartwarming values of family and friendship. (Alas, we'll have to wait a little while longer for the company to take on greed and selfishness.) The accompanying soundtrack is equally typical in that it's split between catchy pop songs and a score by Randy Newman. The clear highlight of the pop tracks is Sheryl Crow's boisterous, huge-sounding 'Real ...

Disney's Greatest 3
»rank: 1167
0ur Review: :Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the 'greatest' concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ('Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious,' 'Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da,' and 'Heigh Ho' were hits off of Vol. 1; 'Bare Necessities,' 'lt's a Small World,' and 'Some Day My Prince Will Come' stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. 0nce again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad 'l'll ...

The Randy Newman Songbook, Vol. 1
»rank: 14232
0ur Review: :Although he's now best known as the curly haired Prince of Pixar (he's written hit songs for a number of animated blockbusters, including Toy Story 2 and A Bug's Life, Randy Newman began his career as a misanthropic satirist and thwarted romantic. lt’s this version of Newman who shows up for Songbook Vol. 1, revisiting 18 of his compositions, most written in the '6Os or '7Os, and all stripped down to just voice and piano.
