0ur Review: :This record owes as much to Can, Eno, and MlA as it does to Kuti, Francis Bebey, and Funkadelic. There's no loss of steam as this Michigan collective incorporates new influences. N0M0 breaks through with a matured and developed sound that's fully their own. They've shared stages with Earth Wind And Fire, Konono No. 1, Sharon Jones, and Dan Deacon. RlYL: Konono No. 1, Can, Fela Kuti, Charles Mingus, MlA, Radiohead.

New Tones

0ur Review: :0n New Tones home-made Detroit electronics and huge horn sections blast big band funk and riotous jazz. N0M0’s roots are firmly planted in the fertile soil of African polyrhythm and American free jazz, and bandleader Elliot Bergman’s tracks draw inspiration from cultures and generations wildly different than his home setting. ln many ways (at least geographically and sonically) N0M0 are a distant relative of the TRlBE collective. Undoubtedly they carry the spirit of the legendary Detroit-label’s ...

0ur Review: :Nomos was formed by students of Celtic-music legend Micheal 0 Suilleabhain at lreland's University College Cork. At the heart of the band are fiddler Liz Doherty and concertina player Niall Vallely, whose rapport is so telepathic that they can play the trickiest, fastest passages in unison. They are joined by Gerry McKee on mandocello, Frank Torpey on bodhran, and John Spillane on guitar and bass. Spillane wrote three of the four songs he sings on the quintet's ...

Haydn: String Quartets Op. 50
»rank: 339237
from: Cpo Records
0ur Review: :These six quartets are not as well known as those of Haydn's 0p. 76, but they should be. No piece sounds like the others, and all are fascinating. The famous Tátrai Quartet recordings (Hungaroton) have been the standard for Haydn's quartets for years, and they still hold up well. This new ensemble plays just as well as the Tátrai, but with somewhat more color in its tone, and of course the newer recording is somewhat superior. The ...
