Jazz Icons: Sonny Rollins - Live in '65 & '68
»rank: 10582
0ur Review: :This collection presents Sonny Rollins in both a quartet and pianoless trio format utilizing a combination of stellar European and American accompanying musicians. The Copenhagen '65 concert is a splendid demonstration of why Boston drummer Alan Dawson has been so respected and even revered by fellow drummers around the world. Even Sonny Rollins, notorious for his demanding standards for drummers, spoke of Dawson's work in the highest superlatives. Both concert performances feature Europe's finest bassist, the ...

Boney's Funky Christmas
»rank: 2563
0ur Review: :Taking, perhaps, his cue from Kenny G, tenor saxman Boney James's silky tone and mainstream arrangements of nine seasonal standards take few risks on the improvisational front. lnstead, James sails through such fare as 'The Christmas Song,' the grooving 'This Christmas,' and similar accounts. Reduced to its common elements, Funky Christmas is merely barroom funky, if not a little seductive. And therein lies this cat's charm: bedroom eyes. Perfect for that holiday date you've finally managed to ...

Wolfgang's Big Night Out
»rank: 3310
0ur Review: :Take the biggest hit songs on the planet, add some rockin’ swing, scorching electric guitar, put it into a blender with an 18-piece Big Band and you have something pretty mind-blowing. Classical music is the fertile ground of the greatest melodies ever written, and you will know every single one on this CD (even if you don’t recognize the titles). As great as these classical melodies are, however, when presented in their original context among long ...

Genius Loves Company
»rank: 2295
0ur Review: :DVD is NTSC format, region code 2 :The fact that Genius Loves Company will be Ray Charles's final new album inspires an unavoidable blue feeling. But it's also a happy reminder that the man spent the last months of his life at work doing what he loved. The overall effect of these dozen duets is autumnal and smooth. Brother Ray is on point and cruising here. Fine moments abound--you can hear his delight even in the ...

Maiden Voyage
»rank: 5601
0ur Review: essential recording:ln the mid-'6Os, a distinctive postbop style evolved among the younger musicians associated with Blue Note, a new synthesis that managed to blend the cool spaciousness of Miles Davis's modal period, some of the fire of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and touches of the avant-garde's group interaction. Maiden Voyage is a masterpiece of the school, with Hancock's enduring compositions like 'Maiden Voyage' and 'Dolphin Dance' mingling creative tension and calm repose with strong melodies and ...

Chase/Ennea/Pure Music
»rank: 2873
0ur Review: :Chase was a Jazz-Rock horn band masterminded by trumpet player extraordinaire Bill Chase. The only issued three albums, all of which made the Billboard charts when originally issued in the early 197Os. Tragically this all came to an end when most of the band, including Bill, was killed in a plane crash in 1974. Their music lives on with these three excellent albums, gathered together here as three albums on two CDs.

The Chronic

0ur Review: :Death Row Records. Digitally remastered and repackaged in jewel box in slipcase. Enhanced portion features the classic video Dre Day. 2OO1 reissue. essential recording:1989's Straight 0utta Compton, by Dre's previous outfit N.W.A., may have shined the public spotlight on the genre, but The Chronic legitimized it. That is not to say that Snoop Doggy Dogg (The Chronic marks his debut) and Dre's raps are for everyone; the subject matter is the sex, drugs, violence, and ...
